Gartner Hype Cycle and Mesh Networks : Sensor

04Nov08

Today I finished a white paper for the project that I am working on right now for the CSD (Communication System Design) course at KTH. You can download the white paper in PDF. Here is the executive summary :

Every year new technologies are emerging in the market. One of the concerns of the business people is to select which technology to invest in. There are many ways of “trendspotting” in the IT world. Gartner Hype Cycle aims to pinpoint the maturity, adoption and business application of specific technologies.deneme

So in this white paper, we looked at the Gartner Hype Cycle for the Mesh Networks : Sensor in other words WSN (Wireless Sensor Network) technologies. One of the things that we found is that the technology is not anymore seemed to be an emerging technology as it is not included in the Gartner Hype Cycle 2008. We believe that this is firstly due to the fact that the end-users of the technology is still so new to the concept of having a very new data set that was not available before. And this data which comes from the real-world is not created by certain people for certain reasons so that is a challenge for the manufacturers in the industry.

At the end of the report we have compiled the journey of WSN technologies in the Gartner Hype Cycle between 2005 to 2008 so that you can see how the maturity, adoption and business application of the technology have changed in three years.
